Modern
Terminals Limited, the longest-established container port operator
in Hong Kong, employs more than 1,300 people and operates 24
hours a day throughout the year. In 1998, MTL's container throughput
increased by 23% over the 1997 figure, to 2,507,534 TEUs (20-foot
equivalent units).MTL is one of the leading information technology
based companies in Hong Kong and has invested heavily in information
technology for the organization's operations. In terms of exchanging
detailed cargo information with shipping lines, MTL uses Electronic
Data Interchange (EDI) technology. With the tremendous business
growth in 1998, the EDI system of MTL almost reached the maximum
capacity. The Y2K issues further complicated the problem. The
need to upgrade the EDI system was inevitable. MTL required
a high performance EDI system that could be integrated to application
host systems and various communications servers; and INFOMASTER
had the perfect suite of products.
Using TIE Commerce's
spEDI*suite(TM) EDI translator as the core, INFOMASTER has successfully
developed and implemented an high performance EDI solution to
meet MTL's critical business needs. On top of the powerful EDI
translation functions provided, the MTL ECGlobal EDI system
has additional powerful features that include EDI message 'track
and trace' functions, EDI document management functions and
EDI message queue management functions. A client-server based
GUI EDI management centre is also available for the system administration,
operation and support personnel to use. Infomaster also provides
MTL with top of the line communications servers to connect to
customers. The EDI system has been integrated seamlessly into
the company's application hosts and various communications servers
which support X.400, SNA, SMTP, TCP/IP communications protocols.
